Quick Update…

Okay, so you have probably not even seen yet, but….I revamped my blog design! I gave it a new theme, and it’s different now.

My request to you all is as follows: Can you please have a look at it, and comment below what you think of it compared to before? That is, if you actually saw what my blog looked like before, instead of just reading posts in the Reader.

Also enjoy the gratuitous Supernatural gifs that I enjoy using so much.

Thank you!

LGBTQ Favourites

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of LGBT-themed books – I’m always either reading one, or looking for another to read – so I figured I’d let you in on my personal list of favourites that I’ve read in past years. Some are recent, whereas others, I haven’t read in a while. These are in no particular order, just because I’m the most indecisive person in the world, so just enjoy.

Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda (Becky Albertalli)

Synopsis: Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

My Feelings: If you’re looking for a cute YA boy-on-boy romance that ends with a ‘Happily Ever After’, then this is bound to leave you smiling from ear to ear by the end of it. It’s sweet and adorable, without being too cliche and sugary. Also, the sequel (of sorts) is coming out this year!!!!!

You can read my review here.

Fox-Hat And Neko (August Li):

Synopsis: Tokyo high school student Tsukino Ayumu never wanted to stand out. He’s always been content to run at the middle of the pack and go unnoticed, and he doesn’t expect much to change when he moves to the small fishing village of Yuuyake to live with his grandfather.

In Yuuyake, Ayumu makes his first real friend in Ikehara Haruki and forges close ties with two girls, Shizuka and Chou. Together, the four friends muddle through the messy world of dating and relationships while trying to succeed in school and prepare for the world they’ll enter when it ends. Fate has other plans for them, though, and Ayumu in particular, as an invisible threat targets the village’s young people.

After being plagued by disturbing, violent dreams, Ayumu learns what the spirit world expects of him. He must learn to fight and to lead—but he’s only ever been ordinary. With the support of friends he would die to protect, Ayumu faces a destiny only he can fulfill. But others have taken an interest in Ayumu. The mysterious Fox-Hat and Neko know more about Ayumu than he knows about himself, and they lead him onto a path that might end in the destruction of them all.

My Feelings: This was the first ARC I ever recieved, and it’s a delightfully quirky mix of fantasy, and folklore, and romance. Warning though, you’ll get way too invested in these characters by about halfway through the book. That’s how good it is.

What Happened To Lani Garver (Carol Plum-Ucci):

Synopsis: The close-knit residents of Hackett Island have never seen anyone quite like Lani Garver. Everything about this new kid is a mystery: Where does Lani come from? How old is Lani? And most disturbing of all, is Lani a boy or a girl?

Claire McKenzie isn’t up to tormenting Lani with the rest of the high school elite. Instead, she befriends the intriguing outcast. But within days of Lani’s arrival, tragedy strikes and Claire must deal with shattered friendships and personal demons–and the possibility that angels may exist on earth.

My Feelings: This book brings together philosophy and teenagers in a way I wasn’t expecting to get drawn into so much. Lani Garver, this androgynous angel, who is just what Claire needs, is absolutely perfect. Everyone needs a Lani in their life in my opinion – someone who isn’t afraid to tell you the hard truth when you need a reality check, but who’ll also hug and comfort you when you need that as well. This is a must-read for everyone.

Lies My Girlfriend Told Me (Julie Anne Peters):

Synopsis: When Alix’s charismatic girlfriend, Swanee, dies from sudden cardiac arrest, Alix is overcome with despair. As she searches Swanee’s room for mementos of their relationship, she finds Swanee’s cell phone, pinging with dozens of texts sent from a mysterious contact, L.T. The most recent text reads: “Please tell me what I did. Please, Swan. Te amo. I love you.”

Shocked and betrayed, Alix learns that Swanee has been leading a double life–secretly dating a girl named Liana the entire time she’s been with Alix. Alix texts Liana from Swanee’s phone, pretending to be Swanee in order to gather information before finally meeting face-to-face to break the news.

Brought together by Swanee’s lies, Alix and Liana become closer than they’d thought possible. But Alix is still hiding the truth from Liana. Alix knows what it feels like to be lied to–but will coming clean to Liana mean losing her, too?

My Feelings: If you want an adorable girl on girl romance that’ll keep you on your toes, this is something you need to read. The whole time I was reading it, I was waiting for the moment when the truth was going to come out, but it was a good feeling. It’ll make you shiver with….

Anything Written By L.A. Witt.

This is more of a generalisation, but seriously, I am in love with all of L.A Witt’s books, and she’s one of my top auto-buy authors at this point, even though I only discovered her back in 2015 when I started this blog and started looking for ARCs on Netgalley. She writes these intriguing Male/Male romances, with just enough steam in them to get you a little hot under the collar. I know, I’ve felt hot and flustered quite a few times while reading (especially with Running With Scissors).

Here are ones I’ve read and reviewed, and if you click over to my Book Review page, you can read the reviews for each of these.

Also, I just finished reading Just Drive by L.A. Witt, and To Live Again, so look out for those reviews coming up soon!

The Art of Being Normal ( Jeff Garvin):

Synopsis: The first thing you’re going to want to know about me is: Am I a boy, or am I a girl?

Riley Cavanaugh is many things: Punk rock. Snarky. Rebellious. And gender fluid. Some days Riley identifies as a boy, and others as a girl. The thing is…Riley isn’t exactly out yet. And between starting a new school and having a congressman father running for reelection in uber-conservative Orange County, the pressure—media and otherwise—is building up in Riley’s so-called “normal” life.

On the advice of a therapist, Riley starts an anonymous blog to vent those pent-up feelings and tell the truth of what it’s REALLY like to be a gender fluid teenager. But just as Riley’s starting to settle in at school—even developing feelings for a mysterious outcast—the blog goes viral, and an unnamed commenter discovers Riley’s real identity, threatening exposure. Riley must make a choice: walk away from what the blog has created—a lifeline, new friends, a cause to believe in—or stand up, come out, and risk everything.

My Feelings: Yay for diversity! This is a heart-wrenching novel about someone who just doesn’t fit in – the lost sock in the dryer of life. I was entranced the whole way through, and I just became so invested in all of these characters – Bec, Riley, Solo. If you’re looking for a book that deals with gender fluidity, and identity, this is a must-read. Well, it should be a must-read anyway, but that goes without saying.

If you have any recommendations for me, my comments section is right down below, and I always want LGBTQ books to read! The more diverse the better.

Happy reading!

20 Facts About Becca

Well, we’re nearly there – 2016 is almost over, and thank god for that. It’s been an insane year in so many ways, and so many lives have come to an end this year, but I figured, why not end the year on a positive note and do some blogging?! Also, it’s Monday, and I’m bored.

Just because I don’t think I’ve ever done this, I’m going to list twenty facts about myself.

  1. I’m currently dressed in my brand new Suicide Squad pjs, and I’m kind of in love with them right now.
  2. My laptop’s been christened ‘Lula’ – just because.
  3. I have pink and black sheets on my bed at the moment.
  4. Supernatural is my favourite show of all time – how did I not watch this sooner than I did?!
  5. My hair is almost always in a ponytail low on my head, because as long as it’s out of my face and looking relatively neat, I really don’t care.
  6. Emma Watson is my ultimate celebrity crush – after all, she’s intelligent, an amazing actress, and she managed to both do secondary school as well as filming the biggest movie franchise of all time, and then actually went to university while acting as well, and now she balances UN work with her film career, which is pretty damn amazing. Also, she’s drop dead gorgeous.
  7. Right now, I’m listening to the soundtrack for High School Musical 2, but five minutes ago, I was listening to 2NE1 and Girls Generation. I’ve got a varied music taste.
  8. I work in a bingo as Floor Staff – that’s basically walking around while the bingo’s on and giving change to customers for the slot games which happen in between the main bingo sessions themselves. Meh.
  9. I have five siblings – two brothers and three sisters, two of whom I share a room with.
  10. My favourite animal is always the cat.
  11. I have a tabby cat who’s about a year old now, called Marbles. I’m the only one she likes in our whole house.
  12. I still live at home with my parents and siblings even though I’m 22 now.
  13. I’m a huge knitting person – I currently have 3 works in progress, and one of them is nowhere near finished. Whoops.
  14. Bisexual AF and proud of it.
  15. Rocky Horror Picture Show is my all time favourite movie, and the Time Warp will never fail to get me on my feet, dancing.
  16. I’m wearing pink fluffy socks at the moment because earlier I cut my toe on my sister’s bed and I want to keep the plaster on somewhat.
  17. I have a Zayn poster above my bed.
  18. The top 3 bookmarks on my laptop are for Tumblr, Ravelry, and Goodreads.
  19. I can speak both French and German, although my memory’s a little rusty since I haven’t spoken either a whole lot since leaving school.
  20. If I could move to any fictional universe, I’d either be a Shadowhunter, or I’d be a witch in the Potter wizarding world.

Thank you for reading!

Hiatus, Knitting, and More

I’m a bad person. I’ve been neglecting my books, and my little blog is crying out for attention.

I’m sorry, little blog. Let me explain:

I know my posting this year has been sketchy at best, but in these last two months (ish), I’ve just dropped off the face of the earth. That’s because I’ve discovered knitting, and it’s basically taken over my entire life. I’ll come back to that in a second.

Add onto that the fact that I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump. I went through a period of reading really bad books, and now I’m in desperate need of something good that will really capture my interest. Honestly, if anyone has any recommendations of books that are really amazing, please let me know so I can claw my way out of this slump? Many thanks in advance.

Anyway, back to the knitting. I’ve become a knitting addict. It started off innocently enough, with one ball of wool and a pair of straight 6mm needles, but now I am the proud owner of straight needles, circular needles, giant needles, and more skeins of wool than I know what to do with. I currently have two WIPs, and they’re not small ones either. If you want to see what I’ve been doing, take a trip over to my Instagram.

<blockquote class=”instagram-media” data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-version=”7″ style=” background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:658px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% – 2px); width:calc(100% – 2px);”>

So yeah. That’s a basic summary of where I’ve been lately.

I’m going to try and post some stuff this coming week, but I’ll definitely be back to regular posting once Christmas is here and done with (new laptop, yo!).

Lots of love, my little book nerds.

Blogger Interview – Heir of Glitter

So, here on Shih Tzu Book Reviews, I have  a little feature that I call Blogger Interviews (by the way, if anyone can  think of a cooler name, I’m all ears) and now it’s Olivia’s turn to get interviewed.

I actually did a Blogger Spotlight on Olivia a while back, so once you finish reading this, take a jump on over there and have a gander at that.

Now…on with the post!

Tell me a little about your blog – how did you come up with the name/URL for it?

I knew I wanted to include glitter somehow, because I love it as much as Magnus Bane does. XD Then I was trying to incorporate glitter into the title of one of my favorite books, which at the time were the Throne of Glass books. My ultimate favorite was Queen of Shadows, but I thought “Queen of Glitter” sounded a bit too girly, so I went with my second favorite, Heir of Fire. Then “Heir of Glitter” was born. 😀

How long have you been blogging?

I posted my first post on September 13, 2015, so…nearly 9 months. 😀

What’s your favourite and least favourite thing about being a book blogger?

My favorite thing is interacting with other bloggers and talking about books, because I’ve yet to make any real life reader friends. 😉

My least favorite thing…would have to be making time to write a post. Now that I’m on summer break I have much more time, but I try to balance reading a lot and posting frequently. During the school year, the challenge is balancing school work and blogging. :/

What’s been your favourite post that you’ve posted so far?

Oh, gosh…I don’t know. Probably any of my discussions, because I love talking to people and comparing opinions. 😀 I also like doing reviews, especially for hyped books it’s taken me forever to read – Vampire Academy, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, and soon Six of Crows.

Are you planning any new features for your blog?

Not at the moment, but I might try to come up with something fun over the summer. 🙂

If you could take over any book blog for a week, who would you take over and what would you do with their blog?

I wouldn’t want to take over anyone’s blog, because it’s their own little spot of the Internet, and I know I wouldn’t want anyone taking over mine. 😉

If you could move to any fictional universe, which would you choose to inhabit?

PRYTHIAN. That’s from the A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy, if any of you don’t know. ❤

In your opinion, which fictional couple would you happily break up? And which couple would you lock in a room until they were happily, deliriously in love?

I would break up any relationship Tamlin got involved in. He doesn’t deserve anyone. He should be alone. XD But seriously, probably Lara Jean and Peter from my current read, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, because I don’t like Peter. ^.^

And who would I lock in a room to make them fall in love? Feyre and Rhys don’t need any help. XD So…Rose and Mason from Vampire Academy, because Rose needs to get over Dimitri. He’s seven years older and the idea of them is just weird. ._.

Who are your top five auto-buy authors?

Sarah J. Maas, Cassandra Clare, Rick Riordan, Marissa Meyer, and…probably Jennifer L. Armentrout. They’re all evil geniuses. 😀

Pizza or Burgers? Neither. 0.0

Music or books? Both, but if I had to pick one, books. 😉

Guys or food? Food. Duh. Unless we’re talking fictional guys… XD

Tamlin or Rhysand? RHYSAND. ❤ I loved Tamlin in ACOTAR but after reading ACOMAF he can just leave.

Ugly and smart, or pretty and dumb? I don’t think anyone is really ugly, but…ugly and smart. I’d rather have brains than looks. 😉

Bath or shower? Shower.

Beach or pool? Beach, for sure. I don’t live close to any, but I definitely prefer them. 😀

Fiction or non-fiction? Fiction, of course.

Hermione or Katniss? Both…okay, Hermione.

Online or offline? This is hard. I like being online to blog and offline to read…but offline. Because if I didn’t read, I wouldn’t have a blog anyway! 😉

Girls or guys? Girls. I have nothing against guys, but I think girls are easier to relate to in books and real life. Not to mention, all but one of my favorite characters and authors are girls. It’s not intentional, it just happens. 🙂

John Green or David Levithan? John Green.

LGBT books or hetero books? I like both, but I’ll always prefer LGBT because books need more diversity. 😀

Jace or Will? I love all Herondales! >.< But I guess I have to say that Will did steal a little bit more of my heart than Jace.

Thank you so much for doing this, Olivia!

To anyone else, if you want to be a part of this feature, then shoot me an email at shihtzubookreviews@gmail.com, and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Happy reading!

It’s my birthday, it’s my birthday

It’s the one year anniversary of this blog! One year ago today, I posted my very first blog post, introducing myself and my four shih tzus. Now, here we are, with a nice little following, and lots of new blogging friends!

Looking back, I can’t believe how clueless I was – I didn’t know about scheduling, or about terms like DNF or Booktube, or even about Netgalley. That’s certainly changed, and now I’m taking part in book blogger events like ARC April, and I’m being tagged in book tags and blogger awards.

There’s some people I’d really like to thank for making this last year such an amazing time:

Jonathan and Aaron @ Husband And Husband – you were one of my very first followers, and one of the first blogs I ever followed as well, and I’ve loved every one of your posts since then.

Cristina @ My Tiny Obsessions – you comment or like almost all my posts, and I really appreciate all the support. Every like, or every comment, gives me encouragement to keep blogging, and I’m so glad I’ve been able to meet you online to share our bookish interests. Lots of love!

Bloggers Bookshelf – Way back last year when this blog was just a little speck on the internet, I did an interview for these lovely bookish people (not unlike the blogger interviews I’ve done myself on this blog) and that was one of the things which really boosted my blog traffic, so thank you so much!

Kim @ By Hook or By Book – Just imagine if we hadn’t met through that comment on Aaron and Jonathan’s blog post. I wouldn’t have made friends with such a cool person, and I am thankful that I did. You’re awesome – don’t forget that!

There are other people that I’ve probably forgotten, but these are the main ones right off the top of my head. For all those other amazing bloggers that I’ve been lucky enough to meet, THANK YOU! Without you all, I would have given up after maybe a month of this. Look at me now though – a whole year! Lets hope I can make it to next April and still be blogging.

Happy reading!

Blogger Interview – By Hook Or By Book

Remember when I persuaded Jonathan and Aaron at HusbandAndHusband to let me interview them? Well, I also asked another of my favourite bloggers to answer some questions for me, and she said yes, and I’m only getting around to posting this now. Bad Becca!

Anyway, this is my interview with the epic blogger that is Kim at By Hook or By Book!

Thank you so much for doing this, Kim. You’re one of my favourite bloggers, and I’m so excited to keep going with this feature. To start off with, how did your blogging story start? What motivated you to start blogging in the first place? Did you have a blog before this one?

I was a children’s librarian for over two decades before poor health forced me into early retirement. One of the things I really missed was discussing books. I was still submitting reviews for my library’s blog, but it wasn’t enough for me. Then, I stumbled across WordPress in July 2014 and immediately knew this online community was for me.

What’s your favourite part about blogging?

My favorite part about blogging is the wonderful friends I’ve made from all over the world. It’s been such an amazing experience! I thought when I first started By Hook Or By Book that it would just be this little corner of the blogging world where I’d share my love of books with a few like-minded individuals. A year and a half later I have over 500 followers, which to me is just shocking. Everyday I discover another new and exciting blogger that I simply must follow! Some of them are book lovers like me, but there are also poets, authors, artists, and many other talented people.

Is there any downsides that you have found through your own blogging experience?

There has been no downside to my blogging experience. Everyone I’ve met has been incredibly nice and supportive. Because of my health I tend to be a bit isolated, but being part of the WordPress community has encouraged me to come out of my shell.

Is there any blogs you read regularly?

I follow so many amazing blogs it’s difficult to single out any, but here’s just a few:

Jonathan and Aaron
These amazing people have taught me so much about movies, music, and more

Do you think your reading tastes have been influenced by other book bloggers?

I’ve definitely stepped out of my comfort zone regarding my reading tastes thanks to other bloggers. For example, Eric suggested I try “The Mailman”, by J. Robert Lennon which I’d never have picked up on my own. Needless to say I really enjoyed it!

If you could do an interview or a Q&A with any author, who would be your choice of author?

If I could do a Q&A with an author I think it would be with Stephen King, although JK Rowling would be a close second. I’ve been a huge fan of “The Master of Horror” since I first read “Carrie” when I was a teenager. He has this incredible talent for getting into the minds of his characters and readers.

Have you got any new content in the works at the moment?

I’ve been poking away at a young adult novel for the past couple of years. It’s based on my love for the tv show “Supernatural”. I don’t know if it will ever really go anywhere, but I’ve enjoyed writing it.

Which social media do you find yourself using the most often?

I’m not on any social media right now so I’d have to say WordPress is my sole online media addiction.

Yay! Now for the quickfire round, These are going to be some hard questions, which will have you prodding the deepest depths of your psyche – actually, probably not that hard.

Batman or Superman?

I’d have to pick Batman because I love my heroes to be dark and tormented!

Coffee or tea?

I’m definitely a coffee girl all the way! Especially flavored coffee. My current obsession is Pumpkin Spiced Latte.

Dark chocolate or white chocolate?

I love both dark and white chocolate, but if I had to pick I’d choose dark. Since it has all these health benefits I can feel less guilty eating it!

DC or Marvel?

Oh No! You’re really going to make me choose between DC and Marvel, Rebecca? Well, right now I’m currently obsessed with the tv shows Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, and Supergirl, so I’d go with DC right now.

Tattoos or piercings?

If I could I’d definitely have a couple of tattoos. Unfortunately my husband has threatened to divorce me if I get one so..

Chinese takeout or Indian?

We don’t have a lot of Indian restaurants where I live, so I’m definitely a fan of Chinese takeout. Probably too much so!

Morning or night?

I’m definitely a night person. I like to stay up even if it’s just watching tv or reading.

Go-to comfort food?

My go to comfort food is chocolate. Yep. I’m a confirmed chocoholic!

Pet peeves?

I guess I’d say I have two pet peeves. One is tailgating. Way too many drivers do this and it’s one of the few things that makes me swear. My other pet peeve is book related and concerns “insta- love” . Actually, now that I think about it this usually makes me swear also. So many authors use this plot device with their characters and in my humble opinion it just doesn’t work and it’s incredibly annoying.

Dream lazy day?

My dream lazy day is sitting in my favorite comfy chair with an awesome book, drinking my pumpkin spice latte. As you can tell I’m pretty easy to please.

Dream vacation?

I haven’t travelled much at all, but one country I’d really love to visit is Ireland. My father’s family is from there and I’d love to trace my roots and see if I have any relatives still over there.

Thank you for doing this, Kim – for anyone who wants to read more about this amazing blogger, I did a Blog Spotlight on Kim’s blog ages ago. Also, if you’d be interested in being a part of this feature, email me or send me a message on Twitter. Links to my social medias are all in my About Page.

Happy reading!
